The island is characterized by pines, sandy dunes and traditonal red wooden buildings and small fishing villages. Hailuoto has only 1000 inhabitants (and about 350 mooses in the yearly countings). The island’s nature is very clean and peaceful with four clear seasons. Hailuoto is popular destination to the bird watchers. The ferry travels once per hour to the Hailuoto from the mainland. During the coldest winter season official ice-road on the sea is used. Hailuoto has a long history of artist both living and visiting the island.
